Microbial Indicators of Ecosystem Health in Long Island Sound

About This Program

This multi-year project involves collaboration with Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor (CSHH) core monitoring program and aims at understanding the influence of microbial activities on water deoxygenation, a major environmental problem in Hempstead Harbor, Long Island Sound. Every summer, members of Santoferrara’s team collect water samples simultaneously to CSHH’s monitoring of key environmental data (for example, water temperature and dissolved oxygen). At Hofstra, the team conducts microscopy, DNA and bioinformatic analyses to investigate microbial species that may contribute to hypoxia. We periodically exchange findings with CSHH and provide them with scientific support for their technical reports.
