GEOTeams sought to inspire interest in geoscience study and careers through its novel multi-level approach of engaging students at different stages in their education in a five-week summer research project related to the challenges of living sustainably on islands such as Long Island and the Greek volcanic islands. The ultimate goal was to increase the number of students, particularly those underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) such as women and Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and American Indians or Alaska Natives (as defined by NCSES, 2019).
